WARNING: This is a TRIGGERED RANT
Okay.
So, I was scrolling through Facebook the other day (Christmas day, actually) and I stumbled upon a post in a group where a girl had asked “I can’t be the only one who’s on her period this Christmas, am I?”
I made the mistake of pressing the comment button.
The comments were awful.
“You’re a fool. What kind of stupid question is this?”
“Ew you’re disgusting”
“Of all the things to talk about, this is what you pick? Barf!”
“You clearly don’t have sense if you are posting this kind of rubbish”
Um, bibbity bobbity back the fuck up for a sec. Did she just call periods ‘rubbish’? Did that dude just call periods ‘disgusting’?
She asked a simple question and it breaks my heart to know that fellow women who are supposed to support one another, come to her aid and tell the other guys to back up were actually casting stones at her, saying she doesn’t have sense for bringing up such a topic.
She doesn’t have sense for talking about a natural part of life? She doesn’t have sense for asking about a symbol of feminism?
What’s with all this backlash over this topic? I started thinking about this deeply and I realized it’s not just on social media. It happens all over the society.
The other day, I went to my friend’s home and her mum lashed out at her when she saw an open wrapper/packet of a sanitary towel in her bathroom. In her own words, she’d said “This (pointing to the wrapper) is an eyesore”. You’re assaulting the eyes of your other family members. What if one of your brothers came in here and saw this? He would know you’re on your period!
Excuse me, what is so wrong with them knowing? Periods are a natural part of a woman’s life. Why should it be hidden like some forbidden taboo?
It’s saddening to know the society is so brainwashed that even the PACKET of lady products can be a topic for controversy when really, it isn’t. Periods should be normalized. They aren’t a conspiracy theory.
Periods are given from God.
They signify life, strength of the female species and womanhood and granted, it shouldn’t be displayed to every eye as some people cannot stand the sight of blood but it is not a phenomenon that should be labelled as disgusting.
You, Mr. Man, who thinks periods are gross. Do you realize your mother had periods?
You, Ms. Lady, who thinks periods are rubbish, are you sure you go through periods? and if yes, is that really what you think of it? Well, that’s your opinion about yourself. If you choose not to embrace the fact that you are strong and powerful, if you decide to succumb to the stupid stigma in the society and accept that your period is something that must never be spoken of, like some sort of abomination…. Let me just say the future is looking pretty bleak for you.
People will counter and tell me “Periods shouldn’t be announced to the whole world” and that is true. But let me tell you this. It shouldn’t be announced to the whole world BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THOSE TOPICS THAT DON’T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE BROUGHT UP, not because it is a repulsive topic that would ‘gross everyone out’.
I’m basically saying that if it IS brought up, it shouldn’t be a source for backlash because it doesn’t deserve it.
If you’re grossed out by the idea of periods not because you have a medical intolerance for blood but simply because you think it’s repulsive when girls do it then, by all means, stop associating with girls. It’s that simple.
Your mother was a girl. You probably have a wife or a girlfriend. You’re going to interact with the feminine species wherever you go so if you can’t handle it, I suggest you don’t even try to get close at all.
Even if you DO have a medical intolerance for blood, respectfully make your statement and leave the vicinity. Don’t expect that words like “EW!” or “Fucking gross” or the act of isolating her will make her feel inferior and go crawl under a hole.
Because let me tell you, that’s not going to happen.
We’re not going to hide or shy away if it is discovered. It is not a crime.
